DEA Destroyed a LOT of Cannabis in 2022 – Cannabis Legalization News May, 2023

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported that they confiscated over 5.7 million marijuana plants in 2022, which is a significant hike in comparison to the years prior that saw a decline in numbers due to legalization at the state level. The figures were made available via their Domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program (DCE/SP) report released earlier this year.

This marks the highest seizure rate since 2011, despite the fact that arrests related to cannabis have been dropping.

“Despite considerable state-level progress, more than half of all US states continue to ban regulated adult-use cannabis markets,” he said. “Furthermore, the federal government overtaxes state-licensed cannabis businesses and makes it extremely difficult for them to access basic financial services so that they can better compete with unregulated operators.”

By 2022, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) made only 5,061 arrests related to cannabis, a decrease of 24% from 6,606 the year before. Morgan Fox, political director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), explained that this is due to half of US states still banning regulated adult-use cannabis markets. Additionally, federal taxation on state-licensed cannabis businesses makes it hard for them to access banking and financial services compared to their unregulated counterparts.

In summary, the slow progress in marijuana arrests is due to some states not yet legalizing use and the federal government’s overtaxing of state-licensed dispensaries.
