What Question 8 would do

According to the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s official Question 8 information for voters, a Yes vote would end the adult-use retail system, with the repeal taking effect Jan. 1, 2028. A No vote keeps current law. The medical marijuana program is not repealed by the measure.

Put plainly: Yes on 8 ends adult-use sales. No on 8 keeps them.

Who is funding the Question 8 campaign

In its Oct. 8 report, GBH News said the main Yes committee had raised more than $3 million, almost entirely from the fundraising arm of Smart Approaches to Marijuana. GBH reported that the main No committee had raised more than $2 million. CLN has not independently reviewed state campaign-finance filings, so these figures are attributed to GBH.

Who has come out against it

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said, “I am voting No on 8 to protect that progress, not turn back the clock,” according to a campaign release reported by Marijuana Moment.

What happens next

  • Nov. 3, 2026: Massachusetts voters decide Question 8. Endorsements and fundraising are not results.
  • If it fails: adult-use sales continue under current law.
  • If it passes: the repeal takes effect Jan. 1, 2028, leaving time for licensees, landlords, lenders and employees to plan. Operators with Massachusetts exposure should review leases, debt and supply contracts with counsel now; Cannabis Industry Lawyer covers those questions.

We will update this page with the result after Nov. 3.
